Which issues do you think should be the main focus for women in Uganda?
Back ground
While addressing the press on 22nd July 2014 in Kampala, women activists under
Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) said they will front women candidates for
leadership positions in the 2016 general elections to make sure that issues
which concern them like women rights are recognized as national development
issues.
The Executive Director of FOWODE, Ms Patricia Munabi, said it was necessary to
ensure that women’s issues are at the centre of conversations in all political
parties.
Although the constitution of Uganda (1995) ensures women representation at all
leadership levels, politics in Uganda continues to be dominated by men. Women
currently comprise 52 per cent of Uganda’s population but only 42 per cent are
in public service posts compared to 58 percent of men. Women of Uganda also
face other wide ranging challenges including discrimination, low social status,
lack of economic self sufficiency, and greater risk of HIV/AIDS infection
according to Foundation for Sustainable Development.
