Do you think Uganda's
health system is well prepared for the deadly Ebola outbreak?
Background
On 31st July, 2014, the Minister of health issued a press statement warning the
people of Uganda to take precautionary measures to avoid being infected with
the deadly Ebola virus that has infected more than one thousand people in West
Africa, and killed over 700.
In Uganda, there are only 3 national referral hospitals: Mulago hospital,
Mbarara hospital and Butabika hospital. There are also 12 regional hospitals,
and 39 district hospitals. But Mulago hospital, for example, deteriorates every
year, with few workers to handle many patients, no medicine for patients and
only recently, no money to pay the hospital’s water bill.
Uganda has seen several major Ebola outbreaks and the deadliest was in 2000
when 425 people were infected and more than half of them died. There was more
success in 2012 with only 17 lives claimed. A team from the medical organization,
Doctors without Borders, said that Uganda has developed the capacity to respond
to Ebola emergencies.
