How can agriculture be made attractive to the youth as a form of employment?
Back Ground
In 2012, the Uganda Bureau of
Statistics revealed that 64% of Ugandan youth were unemployed. Given that 74%
of Uganda’s population are below the age of 30 years, there is an immediate
need for job creation.
According to research at Makerere
University, agriculture provides employment to about 66% of Uganda’s workforce
but unemployed youth generally have negative attitude towards employable
opportunities in the Agricultural.
Some of the reasons for this
situation are; youth think agriculture is labor intensive and less profitable,
parents encourage their children to study professions like medicine, law,
accountancy, (generally white collar professions) and in schools, cultivation
activities are seen or used by teachers as forms of punishment hence
inculcating a negative attitude against the profession.
