Who should be held more accountable for the poor infrastructure in Government aided schools?
BACKGROUND:
Although
the Government has prioritize investment in school infrastructure,
there have been rampant reports about contractors failing to deliver.
The Ministry of Education and Sports report, which has been released
reveals that a total of 195 contractors who were building facilities at
206 Government aided schools, did poor work.
Basically
the Tender Committee is in charge of issuing the tender to the bidders -
these are normally construction companies. There is also a team of
Supervising Engineers who are tasked by the ministry of works to
supervise the work to ensure that the work is done in accordance to
acceptable standards. Political leaders have the right to supervise and
report any possible bad work to the relevant authorities.
There
have been cases where the buildings have collapsed after one or two
years of construction. The Government should therefore, impose tougher
sanctions against contractors who fail to do work expected (New Vision
Editorial October 2012)
